چکیده

The study of glottalization is usually based on methods whose limited reliability in the analysis of non sustained phonation is widely acknowledged. In this study we propose a method to measure the degree of glottalization which is robust to variation of fundamental frequency and which, applied to the electroglottographic signal, does not depend on changes in vocal tract resonances. The method, based on an original variant of recurrence analysis, is used to study the interaction between phonological glottalization of vowels and contrastive tones in Yalálag Zapotec. In this American Indian language, both modal and laryngeal vowels can occur with three different contrastive tones (low, high and falling). However, the rapid modulation of fundamental frequency needed for the production of contrastive tones is expected to be strongly limited by the presence of laryngealization. We study how speakers resolve the competition between the constraints on the articulation of these two features of Zapotec phonology. Through wavelet based functional mixed regression we could model the changes in the degree of glottalization over the duration of both modal and laryngealized vowels produced with the three different tones.

Acoustic and electroglottographic analyses of nonpathological, nonmodal phonation.

Languages where phonation type and tone are contrastive make use of extremely fine and controlled actions of laryngeal structures; hence, there is little opportunity to variation in either phonation or pitch. Nonetheless, many American Indian languages have contrastive nonmodal phonation, which, moreover, is subject to a great deal of variation. There are a few studies addressing the phonetics ...

Laryngealization and features for Chinese tonal recognition

It is well known that the lowest tone in Mandarin, a language without contrastive phonation, often co-occurs with laryngealization/creaky voice quality, and we provide evidence that this is also the case for the lowest tone in Cantonese. However, the effects of laryngealization on f0 feature extraction for tonal recognition, as well as the potential of laryngealization as a feature for improvin...

Towards a Contrastive Pragmatic Analysis of Congratulation Speech Act in Persian and English

This paper aims at studying the speech act of congratulation in Persian and English with regard to semantic formulas. To gather the semantic formulas related to congratulation, the researchers chose 100 movies (50 in Persian and 50 in English) as the instrument of the study. The only model of cross-cultural comparison was related to that of Elwood (2004). Therefore, we used Elwood’s model as th...

Perception of Lexical Tones in Sylheti

Tone as a phonological category is capable of distinguishing the meanings of two lexical words by varying the pitch height and/or contour differences. In a tone language, it is indispensable for a hearer to perceive the f0 fluctuations (and the phonetic and phonological properties) associated with distinct speech signals that distinguish the lexical meanings (Yip 2004, Francis et. al 2003). To ...
